If you are tired of constantly managing allergy symptoms and looking for long-term relief, allergy injections may offer a more lasting solution. At Richmond Allergy & Asthma Specialists, we provide allergy immunotherapy in the form of shorts to help children and adults find relief. We believe personalized allergy treatment should easily fit into your busy schedule, which is why we offer walk-in allergy injection hours.

What Are Allergy Injections?

Allergy injections (more commonly known as allergy shots) are designed to treat the root cause of your symptoms rather than temporarily mask them. By gradually exposing your immune system to the specific allergens that trigger your symptoms, immunotherapy can help your body become less sensitive over time. For many patients, this means fewer symptoms, less reliance on medication and an overall better quality of life.

How Do They Work?

Immunotherapy is a treatment used to relieve allergy symptoms by administering injections of substances that a patient has been found to be allergic to through skin testing. The goal of allergy injections is to help your immune system build tolerance to these allergens over time. Immunotherapy helps “turn off” the abnormal immune reaction that causes allergy symptoms. As your allergy treatment continues, patients notice a substantial reduction in symptoms and increased comfort.

What Can They Treat?

Immunotherapy is often recommended for patients with allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma, especially when symptoms are frequent, difficult to control with medications or when allergens are unable to be avoided. These allergens may include:

  • Pollen
  • Mold spores
  • Dust mites
  • Animal dander
  • Insect allergens

Two-Phase Allergy Treatment In Henrico, VA

Allergy shots are given in two phases: the build-up phase and the maintenance phase. During the build-up phase, you receive gradually increasing doses of your allergy vaccine. According to our immunotherapy information sheet, this phase typically involves injections twice a week until a maintenance dose is reached, which usually takes about 3 to 4 months.

Once you reach your maintenance dose, injections are spaced farther apart over the next several years. Many patients begin noticing improvement within the first year of treatment. Because every patient is different, your schedule may vary based on how you tolerate treatment and how regularly you are able to receive injections. If your symptoms improve, you will continue to receive injections for 3-5 several years. From there, our allergists will help you decide if you can taper off your treatment or stop it all together.

Benefits Of Allergy Injections

One of the biggest advantages of immunotherapy is that it addresses the underlying allergic response. Instead of simply treating symptoms after they happen, allergy shots help reduce your body’s sensitivity to specific triggers.

Potential benefits include:

  • Fewer allergy symptoms
  • Reduced need for medication
  • Better control of allergic asthma symptoms
  • Improved ability to tolerate everyday exposures
  • Long-term relief that continues beyond treatment for many patients

What To Expect At Richmond Allergy & Asthma Specialists

At Richmond Allergy & Asthma Specialists, our allergists will evaluate your symptoms, perform allergy testing, and determine whether allergy injections are the right fit for your needs. If we recommend immunotherapy, the serum in your injection is made specifically for you based on your allergens and test results.

From there, you will follow our prescribed injection schedule in our office. Because every patient is different, your schedule may vary based on how you tolerate treatment and how regularly you are able to receive injections.

Walk-In Injections

We offer walk-in injection hours, making it easier to stay on track with treatment. No appointment is necessary for routine injections. All you have to do is sign in at the injection station computer during injection hours. For your safety, you must remain in our office for at least 30 minutes after each injection.
